Moving Pool Tables: What You Need to Know

Moving pool tables isn’t like moving other furniture. They’re extremely heavy and very easy to damage, so you’ll need some equipment and a lot of care to move one safely.

Pool tables need to be disassembled before they can be moved, so unless you’ve tackled similar projects before we recommend hiring professionals.

If you want to do it yourself, this is our guide to the basic steps and a few common pitfalls:

What Equipment You’ll Need

Pool tables usually weigh between 300k and 450k, and even the smallest recreational ones will come in at 250k. This means you’ll need certain equipment to safely move one:

– A 4 tonne truck with a hydraulic lift

– Dollies

– Staple puller or flat head screwdriver

– Drill

Disassembling Your Pool Table

Pool tables come in all different sizes and a few different shapes, so always measure all the doors and corridors you’ll need to fit yours through when moving.

Taking a pool table apart requires removing parts in a certain order: the pockets, the rails, the felt, the slate and the legs.

First, remove the staples from the pocket straps on the underside of the rails. Next, remove the bolts holding the rails in place. Carefully remove the rails from the table, and detach the pockets.

Secondly, check if the felt is stapled or glued to the slate. If it’s stapled you’ll need to remove them, and if it’s glued you’ll need to peel it off. If you want to reuse the felt you’ll need to take care it doesn’t rip, and fold the felt afterwards.

Third, use the drill to remove the screws on the top of the slate. They might be covered in beeswax or plaster which you’ll have to remove. Once the screws are out, carefully life the slate onto the dollies. Depending on your model, the slate will be in one, two or three pieces.

The last thing to do is remove the legs from the frame. Once you have disassembled the table, use the dollies to move the slate to your truck. Cover the slate in moving blankets and stack on the bottom of the truck.

Problems to Look Out For

There are a few common problems that arise when moving pool tables. If you are removing the felt from the table, it’s a good idea to get a professional in to re-felt it. It’s very easy to damage felt and it will prevent pool balls from rolling straight.

Secondly, take care to avoid scratching or bumping the slate because tables are usually made up of several pieces, there will be at least one slate seam you have to deal with. If the seam ends up cracked or distorted by damage, the table will be unusable.

Moving house means a lot on your mind. While there’s a lot you can do to prepare for moving day, most of the time you can’t pack up big items until right before the move.

This can be daunting and stressful, so we’ve put together our best tips for safely packing furniture.

1. Gather What You Need

You might be able to get away with putting most of your possessions in garbage bags – although we don’t recommend it – but there are a few things that are absolutely necessary to protect furniture:

Bubble wrap. Look for thicker bubble wrap with larger bubbles; it’s more protective.
Plastic wrap. This is essential for firmly packing protective materials around your furniture, and will guard against water and dirt.
Packing tape. Get more tape than you think you’ll need a little extra.
Moving/Furniture blankets. Use between any wood surface and plastic wrap or bubble wrap. Plastic constricts, and may cause damage.
Sandwich bags. If you remove anything from a piece of furniture, put the nuts, bolts and screws into a bag and clearly label which item it came from.
Mattress cover and shipping box. Mattresses are both precious and relatively fragile. Proper packing materials here are the best guarantee of protection
Sheets of cardboard. Look for corrugated cardboard for better padding.

It’s easiest to prepare your furniture for moving last, once everything else is packed. Lay out all your materials and find a friend to help with the heavy lifting.

2. Remove Anything Detachable

When you’re moving a sofa or mattress, it’s best to use proper covers. If you can’t get them, however, a few extra layers of cardboard will help.

After the padding layers, wrap the item in plastic wrap. Make sure you haven’t put plastic or bubble wrap against wood, as shrinking plastic will cause damage.

4. Loading Your Truck

If you’ve hired a truck that you’re loading yourself, you will need to consider weight distribution. Most breakages are caused by bad loading, so there’s a few important steps:

– Line the bottom of the truck with moving blankets, to protect your belongings.

– Put the heaviest and least fragile boxes you have against the back wall of the truck.

– Place your furniture against this line of boxes. Make sure you’ve evenly distributed the weight across the width of the truck.

– Overall, you’re looking to get a little more than half of the weight in the back half of the truck.

When A Box is Not A Box

Many of our clients can tell us in hindsight the importance of using good quality packing materials.

Many a time our No Damage Removals** **moving staff have been greeted with the very real issue of dealing with boxes that are not strong enough to cope with the weight that has been packed into them.

There are different strengths and densities to cardboard that do not become apparent to some until you are packing up your home. Cardboard boxes are generally manufactured from corrugated fibre board. This is when you see the flutes or waves between the outer layers of two flat fibre boards.

The flute thickness can vary from 0.8 mm to 4.8 mm. Depending on the strength required you can also graduate into a single wall or double walled product. It is the flute combined with the wall that makes the strength of the box itself. You don’t need to pack toilet paper and packets of chips into a box that is strong enough to hold the books from your bookshelf.

Alternatively, you do not want to pack your heavy books into the box the toilet paper was shipped in! Not if you value your books, that is.
