Here’s Some Packing Tips – The Do’s & Don’ts

The Do’s

  • Start packing early. The time taken to pack can be under estimated. Try to allow 2-3 weeks starting with items you are least likely to need. Remember, if it fits in a box, put it in a box.
  • Create a list of goods that you no longer want or need and consider donating these to charity, friends or even hold a garage sale prior to your move.
  • Use proper removal cartons – strong cartons of the same size can be loaded quicker and safer than what weak, odd shaped cartons can be.
  • Use plenty of packing tape, especially at the bottom of the boxes
  • Use butchers paper – never let newspaper touch your goods as the ink rubs off
  • Use towels/linen to protect fragile items
  • Pack heavy items such as books, cans, DVD’s into smaller boxes.
  • Plates and flat fragile items are safest on their ends and wrapped individually with packing paper.
  • Pack heavier items to the bottom of the carton
  • Packing large cartons too heavy causes the carton to distort or break when lifted or contents to crush themselves
  • Remove the microwave plate from the microwave
  • Wrap items individually, placing heaviest items on the bottom and lightest items on top
  • Whatever fits into a box, pack it into a box. This includes lightshades. This serves not only to better protect your items during transit, but also saves time on the move
  • Pack similar items and sets in the same box
  • Use a permanent marker to label each box by writing both the contents and room on the packing tape. This way the boxes can be recycled.
  • When packing goods, ensure that these are packed in small cartons so that they aren’t too heavy to handle easy
  • Use bubble wrap on large vases, bowls and artwork
  • Tape cords to their appliances
  • Seal the carton with 5cm packing tape, ensuring that both the base and the top of the carton are securely sealed
  • Line the base, sides and between layers of contents of the carton with crushed paper (preferably butcher’s paper) at least 5cm thick

The Don’ts

  • Using masking tape instead of plastic packaging tape will cause the cartons to open as masking tape is made out of paper and will rip easily
  • Under filling cartons causes them to crush down when stacked
  • Using large cupboards to pack goods causes failure of furniture when lifted. By all means put in light large things as pillows
  • Using fridges/freezers to pack goods causes lining damage
  • Using newspaper for wrapping creates unnecessary cleaning after unpacking

How To Pack Fragile Items

  1. Begin with placing a good layer of crushed paper or linen at the bottom of the box and up the sides.
  2. The first items into the box should be your larger, heavier items. They should be individually wrapped in paper. Ensure they fit snug to avoid movement.
  3. Place additional crushed paper on top of items packed.
  4. Continue layering the items wrapped in paper between layers of crushed paper, working up from the heavier items at the bottom to the lighter finer items at the top of the box.
  5. Use of paper and linen to fill to the top of the box will ensure added protection and no movement.
  6. Tape the box closed – write on the carton a brief list of the contents and the room it is destined for.
